Deer Management and Forestry BMPs

Forestry professionals and landowners (private and industrial) in the Southeast are increasingly interested in managing forest land to enhance habitats for whitetail deer. This virtual self-paced course aims to provide technical information on specific techniques, including forestry best management practices (BMPs), used to enhance and preserve white-tailed deer habitat on forested land. Topics will include forestry BMPs and white-tailed deer ecology and management.

  • Deer Management - The Basics
  • Deer Food Habits
  • Food Plot Management

Taking the Course

  1. Contact Dr. James Johnson at james.johnson26@uga.edu in order to gain access to the course.  Do not pay for the course until after you have completed and passed all quizzes. 
  2. There are 4 modules and their respective quizzes located in the "Content" section.
  3. Watch videos for each topic and/or read the transcript.
  4. Take and pass the accompanying quizzes with a grade of 80% or better.
  5. CFE's: Once you have completed course & quizzes, contact Dr. James Johnson at james.johnson26@uga.edu to receive your certificate. (More information about CFE's)

Earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

This online course has been reviewed and approved for 4.0 hours of Category 1-SAF Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits and 3.0 hours of Category B and 1.0 Category A Master Timber Harvester (MTH) renewal credits. This course fulfills all of the annual MTH renewal credit requirements. All four modules of this course must be completed to receive credit, no partial credit has been approved. Anyone seeking CEU credits is expected to view all of the video material and/or avail themselves of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant alternatives and successfully complete the appropriate assessment quiz for each presentation in a module. Successful completion or attaining a passing score means answering correctly 4 out of 5 (80% correct) of the questions per quiz. Your SAF-CFE or MTH certificate will be awarded via email and your record of completion will be submitted to the SAF or MTH office for inclusion in their electronic database and a separate database will be kept at UGA for verification as needed. The fee for this 4-hour course is $120.00 and must be paid prior to receiving CFE or MTH renewal credits.
