  • Cost-share opportunities related to hardwood management • Common insect pests and management
  • Hardwood timber stand improvement practices including midstory removal and crop tree release
  • Prescribed fire and its role in upland hardwood stands
  • Intentional management of mixed stands including pine-hardwood mixtures

How One Will Benefit

Upon completion of this course, a forest landowner or land manager will be able to make effective silvicultural and management decisions on regenerating and managing oak forests. Participants will receive pdf file copies of presentations to keep as references.

Instuctors

Dr. David Clabo has been Assistant Professor of Silviculture Outreach with the University of Georgia (UGA) Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources since December 2018. David’s outreach focuses on relaying current scientific information to landowners, practitioners, and natural resource extension agents on a wide variety of forest management and silviculture topics.

Dr. Stephen Peairs is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist of silviculture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. With a focus on hardwood management and forestry herbicide applications, he spearheads research initiatives and establishes demonstration and research sites across Tennessee and South Carolina. Dr. Peairs is also the instructor for FWF-312: Silviculture. Prior to his tenure at UT, he served as an assistant professor and extension specialist for forest management at Clemson University. He also brings extensive experience from his consulting forestry business, Four Aims Forestry LLC, which he owned and operated. Dr. Peairs began his career with the Tennessee Division of Forestry, where he worked for a decade before transitioning into academia and consultancy.

Dr. David Coyle is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University. His extension and research program focuses on forest and tree health and invasive species management in natural and managed landscapes across the Southeast, and he creates educational materials for professionals and non-professionals on everything from invasive plants to native and invasive arthropods. Dave is active on several social media platforms as @drdavecoyle where he regularly posts about topics related to forest and tree health and invasive species. Dave grew up on a farm in Harmony, MN and completed his B.A. in Biology at Luther College, a M.S. in Entomology and Forestry at Iowa State University, and a PhD in Entomology at the University of Wisconsin.

Mr. Ryan Phillips is currently the Associate Chief of Forest Management with the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC). During the last 11 years he has served in a variety of forest management positions with GFC, including Management Forester, District Water Quality Coordinator, State Lead for America's Longleaf Restoration Initiative, and Georgia Champion Tree Program Coordinator. Since 2018 he has served as the Cost Share Coordinator, overseeing GFC's forestry incentive programs and technical service agreements with partner agencies to serve local landowners. Ryan has a Bachelors of Science in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia and is also a graduate of the Advancing Georgia Leaders in Agriculture and Forestry Program (AGL).
